Another new Chip on the block!

The King PAR 10 from Stagg

We had a visit last week from Jeff Davenport of EMD Music who wondered if we might be interested in seeing some LED lighting he was showing around.

Not being one to refuse the offer of seeing something new, we said "Of course - yes please!" and what he bought to show us was actually quite special. The unit that surprised us most was the King PAR 10 - a 60w COB unit that performs almost the same as a conventional small Fresnel lantern. COB (for those of you who are new here) stands for Chip On Block whereby the LED's are mounted on a small square die without any plastic encapsulation. The resulting assembly is then mounted on the bottom of an aluminium dish reflector - the result being a bright and very even spread of light.

It runs in 3 or 6 channel modes under DMX or has standalone & Master/Slave modes with a super quiet fan, so you're not conscious of the thing working. The beam angle is about 38 degrees so would work nicely on a small wash rig or even as a wall washer perhaps - it's not IP rated though so you'd have to limit yourself to indoors. It was also a pleasant surprise to discover that the "street price" for the King PAR is £235. It also comes with a 2 year warranty and the COB is warrantied for 3 years!

We've already quoted a couple of jobs with it, where the customer wants LED but we know they don't have the budget for the bigger and  brighter eLumen8 Alu Tri RGB. As we've talked about it amongst ourselves here, we feel it would make nice complement unit too for houselights where the eLumen8 units do the bulk of the work lighting the performance area.
